Welcome to BARmade
To celebrate our volunteers, we would like to encourage all club parents to become a part of “BARmade”. Every parent who volunteers is automatically a member. Perhaps you have heard of The Sleddogs, based out of Lake Louise, or The Whistler Weasel Workers? Banff Alpine Racers is entering its 45th year and over that time, hundreds of people have stood out as outstanding volunteers. We, as one of the largest ski clubs in Canada, are recognized in many ways. Now it’s time to officially recognize our amazing volunteers with BARmade!
A bit of history: BARmade was started a few years ago by Maggie Mills, along with the support of her husband Damien. Maggie and Damien’s three children went through the BAR/BVQ program as outstanding athletes. After retiring from ski racing, their kids felt the need to give back to the club and joined the coaching side of
things. Both Maggie and Damien have been superstar volunteers and supporters of the club in every way imaginable over the years. It was Maggie who had a vision to start up a club within our club to support, encourage and celebrate our club volunteers, hence what has now evolved into “BARmade”.
The initial mission of the BARmade group is to promote and encourage volunteerism by mentorship, inclusiveness, and sustainability of our volunteer network. We want to celebrate and recognize our volunteers, who include:
• Parents new to the club or the ski race world, interested in meeting new people and learning more about volunteer opportunities.
• Current parents who have been part of our race volunteer community for years and can share their knowledge.
• Alumni parents who, even after their athlete has moved on from the ski racing world, feel welcome to stay part of our volunteer community.
• Or simply friends of the BAR/BVQ family that want to help out our world class club!
And most importantly, we want this to be FUN!!
There will be more information to follow as the BARmade initiative unfolds. In the meantime, keep a look out for cool BARmade merchandise at our upcoming races, events, BARmade socials, etc. Contact Ashley Donohoe at barmade@banffalpineracers.com for more information, or speak to the BARmade Board Sub-Committee
